Studying in the Castle

I'm studying for some chemistry and music theory exams I have tomorrow. Sir Velcro is helping me out, and Princess Bubbles is over in her tank scurrying around with a new cardboard box. Princess Stella is sulking because I accidentally closed a door on her. Not sure where she ended up. She'll be back. Velcro is getting mad that I'm not petting him with both hands. Got to go appease him!

Intro to the Castle

No, it's not an author who follows cops around to get new story ideas.

No, its not a medieval reenactment.

No, it's not a big building made of stone surrounded by a moat.

It's a girl's room that started as a place for her to just chillax... and turned into the Castle. It was originally ruled by lonely girl, but was quickly overturned by a member of the royal family Canidae, who was joined by a comrade from the family Felidae, and was finally completely taken over by members of the families Osphronemidae and Muridae.

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Cynthia. She had her own bedroom, with a nice big bed and a lovely bookcase and dresser. She had plenty of room to move about and do what she needed to do. One day she decided to let the dog spend more time with her. The dog moved into the room, and managed to take up most of the big bed, leaving a small sliver for Cynthia to sleep on. Next, the cat, Velcro, felt a bit left out. So he moved his bed into Cynthia's room, and actually put it on her bed so as to have a better view. Cynthia's sliver was cut in half once again. Later, Cynthia saw a very pretty Betta at the pet store. She bought him, dubbed him Aliquis, and put him in a small tank on her book shelf, next to a row of her favorite books. Then, she decided he needed a lady friend to play with, and upon realizing it's easier to keep multiple females at once, brought home Albica, Dido, Venus, and Lupa. Dido didn't like the other females, so Cynthia bought another fish tank ad put it on the other side of the room and put Dido in it. But it was too big for just Dido, so Cynthia went back to the store, and bought a divider and a very pretty male named Caeruleus. Caeruleus and Dido loved each other very much. Meanwhile, Cynthia was volunteering at a local animal shelter, and was introduced to Chupacabra, the three-legged gerbil. Six months later, Cynthia was once again visiting the shelter as saw that poor Chupa was still there! Cynthia felt terrible and brought her home, putting her in a 20 gal. long vivarium which took up the last semblance of surface area in the room. Chupacabra was renamed a much more suitable Dorothy Bubbles. Cynthia's parents placed a population limit on the room. The society of the room quickly developed into one based on hierarchy and royalty, and somehow Cynthia found herself at the very bottom, waiting on the animal royalty of the Castle.

Population of the Castle:

Princess Stella: a 7 y/o Chihuahua mix rescued from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She is very found of cuddles and warm blankets, and LOVES food of any kind. There is a supply of her cookies in Cynthia's desk drawer

Sir Velcro the Magnificent: 11 y/o white mixed breed cat, born after his pregnant mother was rescued by Cynthia's grandmother. He is cranky in his old age, but can be made happy with belly rubs on his large bed situated on top of Cynthia's. He eats enough tuna to feed China for a week

King Aliquis: the first Betta splendens fish to reside in the Castle. He is a blue veil tail (stereotypical betta) and is trained to do several tricks, including jumping on command and following a target

Prince Caeruleus: the second male Betta to grace the halls of the Castle. He is a butterfly blue double delta tail (he has two tails that are shaped like a fan). He is roomies with Dido and has a massive tailbiting problem... it is currently a third the size it used to be :-(

Princess Dido: the SPOILED female who got her own tank after she couldn't handle living with the other females. A red female betta

Princesses Albica, Venus, and Lupa: the three girls who live together. Lupa is a wild-type female betta, Venus is blue, and Albica is white. Lupa is the boss, Albica is constantly trying to be the boss, and Venus is the bemused bystander who seems to think everything the other two do is hilarious

Lady Dorothy Bubbles: a 1 y/o gerbil rescued from a local shelter, where she ended up when her owner was banned from keeping animals due to an abuse charge. She is missing a leg, which could be a birth defect or the result of an injury that happened before she arrived at the shelter. She only lets Cynthia hold her, and has a  little bit of a biting problem. She is very active, and can chew through a paper towel tube in ten minutes flat! The stack of her supplies is currently taller than her cage.

Cynthia is the loving servant tasked with caring for these animals. Whether its hand feeding the fish fresh shrimp or uncovering the gerbil's buried food dish, she's bound to be doing something for her subjects at any given moment.
